First 10 leaves have tears around margins. Paper label with name of previous owner or previous seller (J. H. Prins, Groningen), pasted on title. Pages occasionally a little stained, occasionally notes in old pencil. One sheet (p.441/2) has a defect to the top right corner due to a misprint. Previously was the book issued in 3 parts, of which only the first one had 4 editions. The latter were in 2, resp. 1 editions. (Ludek Pachman, 1924-2003, Czech GM, 7x Czechoslovak champion, German champion. Noted chess writer and theoretician. He won 2 games against Bobby Fischer in 1959. Josef Marsalek, 1935-2023, several times participated in the Czechoslovak championship. He was a member of the team, which won Student World championship in 1954 – his result was 5 of 5. Still Good: bindings somewhat rubbed. Outer front hinges of both volumes are cracked along spine but bindings are still holding. Endpapers somewhat stained/soiled. At volume 2, front free endpaper is amateurish repaired with paper tape at spine (picutre 3) and rear endpaper is s little creased. Frontispiece and title a little stained. Schiffers, Emanuel: Samouchitel shakhmatnoy igry.
Petrograd, Izd. T-va A- F. Marks, no date (1917), 6th edition, VI, 336p. 530 grams. Later binding with no lettering. Large 8vo (23-25 cm). Fair to good: spine slightly worn at the top, otherwise binding is OK. The title page has been damaged and is amateurishly repaired with tape. Some pages are a little closely trimmed, but the trimming is never affecting the text. The last leaf is somewhat damaged. Internally OK, pages normally browned by age but clean and with no writings. (It contains 675 games and 261 endganes. The first edition of this book was published in 1907. This 6th edition was published in 1917 and is the last or one of the last chess books published before the USSR was founded. Sakharov does not list this book in the 1st edition, it is only listed in the 2nd edition under number 71. Schiffers book was later published in 1919 as the first chess book published in the USSR. Good minus: binding is tight, edges slightlly rubbed, orig. backstrip a little damaged. Name of the previous owner and residua of pasted newspaper cuttings on the first blank sheet ( = probably the original front free endpaper, picture 4). The last blank sheet ( = probably the original rear free endpaper) is somewhat damaged, also with glued residua of some newspaper cuttings. Internally OK, text is clean with no writings.
