The book consists of 40 articles, essays and reviews, written by noted US chess historian John Hilbert over the past several years. All of them deal with history of chess, with 500+ games. The articles are on various themes, many are devoted to chess players, from world champions to almost forgotten ones (Steinitz, Zukertort, Lasker, Staunton, Cheney, Buckle, Sellman, Whitaker, Elson, Chajes, Teed, Smythe, Geffe).
