The First world champion, the native of Prague, Wilhelm Steinitz, 1836-1900, was an original chess player and an equally original personality that, even after more than 100 years, has attracted chess enthusiasts. The author focuses on Steinitz's biography, as well as a description of the world championship matches he took part in 1886-1897. Steinitz played a total of six matches, 4 of which won - against Zukertort, Gunsberg and twice against Chigorin, and the last two lost, both against Emanuel Lasker. There are only four games in the book for illustration (all annotated by the author). Includes Steinitz's career record.
