The author writes about the history of chess in Samara region - the town was known as Kuybyshev in 1935-1991. The book is based on studying of old documents and newspapers and contains a lot of information, which are hardly available from other sources. Includes annotated games and game fragments, biographical information on chess players who lived in this region - like A. N. Khardin, Lev Polugaesky, Y. Yakovich, many photos etc. The book also contains about 50 interviews or remembrances of Samara players. The title Volga gambit is not accidental - it shows on Kuybyshev player Boris Argunov, who is sometimes considered as one of founders of this opening.
