Separate books of that series are devoted to strong Soviet chessplayers, always with selected annotated games. The series was published in Moscow 1980-1991 by Fiskultura i Sport (FiS). All books are paperbacks, same size (21,5cm tall) - except Chiburdanidze which is 20cm. Front cover shows always portrait of the player. "Small Black Series" is an unofficial title - the books have black covers and the reason for "Small" is that books of another edition "Vydayuschiesya shakhmatisty mira" (in English Outstanding Chessplayers of the World") have black dust jackets and are called sometimes "Black Series". The series consists from 17 books, the list is sorted alphabetically by players name. The reference "SA" in text below shows to the book: N. I. Sakharov: Shakhmatnaya literatura v Rossii (2nd edition, Moskva 2001).
