Problemista

Polish problem magazine 1961 - 2004

First published: October 30, 2008

Last Update:     August 21, 2011

The Problemista is a problem magazine published by Eugeniusz Iwanow in town Czestochowa (Poland) since 1961. The issues are duplicated or mimeographed, with interesting content for problem lovers (thousands original problems were published during the edition) but the quality of printing/copying is sometimes not very high. Hand-stamped diagrams and even handwritten titles (as shown on pictures below) could be found in the magazine during first years. In early years 1 issue = 1 number, later can be found double-, triple- and 4-numbers.

Numbers 1-66 are published in large size (quarto, ca 29 x 21 cm). Numbers 1-53 were published in 1961-1965, when publishing was interrupted and continues after a break with number 86 since 1968. Numbers 54-85 were jumped over. However, almost 40 years later, in 2004, Mr. Iwanow published numbers 54-66. These numbers are not marked as later editions and one could think that were published in 1960s. Similarly like numbers 1-53, also 54-66 are of large size. The other missing numbers (67-85) were never published. The publishing was renewed since September 1968 and magazine (now smaller size, octavo, ca 21 cm tall) ran till the end of 1973. The second break came in 1974-1979 and publishing was renewed again since October 1980. The Problemista was then published continuously from number 148 through the last, treble-number 426-428, which was published in December (grudzien) 2003.

In subtitle of the last issue is stated ROK XXXV what means YEAR 35. It is the number of years, in which was the magazine published. The magazine ran in 1961-65, 1968-1973, 1980-2003, it means 5 + 6 + 24 = 35 years.

Several years together (in begin of publishing 5-7 years, later 3-4 ones) are considered as one Volume (Tom) - similarly like at some other problem magazines. For volumes 4-9 were published indexes, while first 3 volumes are probably without indexes.

Some of issues between 30-53 appear also as later copies. These are not simple photocopies as the diagrams are printed professionally (original editions had hand-stamped diagrams). It is possible that editor E. Iwanow made these copies on demand. Or he could make them later, the design of these issues is very similar to those, which were published in 2003 or 2004 (especially double-number 44/45 - see picture below). The sheets/pages can be of a different size.

In addition, at least two publications were published, which are marked as special issues. They have no direct connection to problems or texts in the magazine. The first of them, written possibly by the editor E. Iwanow, is titled: Problemista. Materialy szkoleniowe komisii kompozycji PZSzach. It was published between treble issues 213-215 and 216-218 and is marked as Numer specjalny 1986 rok. The author of the other is Leopold Szwedowski, it is titled Wybor kompozycji szachowych, published in March 1997 between issues 345 and 346 and contains authors problems. It is possible that more of these special issues were published.

I would like to thank to Henryk Hadulla and J. Ken MacDonald for useful and helpful information.
