Jan Smejkal, born in 1946, a player with a refined positional style, belongs to a strong generation of Czechoslovak players born at the end of the war or shortly after it (Hort, Kavalek, Jansa, Plachetka). Smejkal was 3x champion of Czechoslovakia, in the 70s he was one of the best players in the world. He only narrowly missed qualifying for the Candidates' Tournament at the 1973 Leningrad Interzonal. He won agains two world champions, Petrosian and Smyslov. Smejkal has represented at 10 chess Olympiads.
