Viktor Lvovich Korchnoi (1931-2016), nicknamed Viktor the Terrible for his uncompromising style, was a giant of the chess world with a 70-year career and 5,000+ recorded games. He played two World Championship matches, was a 10-time World Championship Candidate, a four-time Soviet champion, and in 2006 became the World Senior Chess Champion. His life and chess career is very colorful - he survived the Leningrad siege as a child, was a top player in the world for decades, emigrated at the age of 45 and has lived in Switzerland since 1978.
