The Hippopotamus Defence is an irregular opening where Black develops Pawns on the sixth rank and pieces usually on the seventh rank, for example e6, d6, often accompanied by the set-up g6, Sg7, b6, Sb7, Nd7, Ne7, etc. From the top players, Boris Spassky or Tony Miles had it in their repertoire.
