The traditional super tournament in Wijk aan Zee in January is one of the strongest tournaments in the world. Sometimes called the Wimbledon of chess. This 83rd edition of the Tata Steel tournament was played 15-31 January 2021 and was exceptional in several respects. The tournament was played live, but without spectators - who were unable to see it due to coronacrisis. 14 players played each other, with an average rating of 2725. The surprise winners were Dutchmen Jorden van Foreest and Anish Giri, both 8.5 of 13. Jesipenko, Caruana and Firouzja followed with 8 points, and the main favorite Magnus Carlsen finished in 6th place with 7.5 points. Other participants were Harikrishna, Tari, Grandelius, Duda, Guijarro, Wojtaszek, Vachier-Lagrave and Donchenko.
