A substantially updated and expanded edition of the book, which was first published in 1949, has been edited by Douglas Griffin and Igor Zveglic. Five-round robin match tournament won Mikhail Botvinnik and became first Soviet World Champion (1. Botvinnik 14/20, 2. Smyslov 11, 3.-4. Keres and Reshevsky 10,5, 5. Euwe 4.) The Keres book contains a history of the tournament and all 50 games with deep annotations and is considered one of the most important chess books ever written. For instance, Garry Kasparov and Boris Gelfand have listed it among their favourite books. This English edition faithfully reproduces Keres' analyses and in some cases adds notes by other masters. Keres' excellent and detailed notes are here supplemented by Botvinnik's unpublished material, and there are additional translations of articles from the Russian contemporary press, background information on the match, etc.
