(Chess Hearts of Legionnaires). History of chess in the Czechoslovak legions, especially in the years 1914-1920 and biographical sketches of legionary chess players: Karel Hromadka, Karel Treybal, Amos Pokorny, Vaclav Grguric, Frantisek Batik, Alois Paral, Karel Halada, Karel Kopic. Each medallion contains a player's biography and a few selected annotated games - often those that have some relation to the legions or when the legionnaires played against each other. In addition to the life stories of both well known and lesser known chess players, the book provides a lot of interesting information that is not widely known, especially in the chess community. Also valuable are the photographs, of which there are about a hundred in the book. Many, perhaps most, are published for the first time - they come from the archives of museums, the Society of Military History and private archives. The contributors to the book include Jindrich Janicek, Jan Kalendovsky and others.
