The book, intended for Black's repertoire, deals with the Modern Defence 1..g6, 2..Bg7, usually followed by c6 and d5. For example, 1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nc3 c6 4.Nf3 d5. The material is divided into 10 chapters and, in addition to the explanation, also contains 31 sample games. Most of the book deals with the opening after 1.e4, but at the end of the book the author discusses 1..g6 after other opening moves by White such as 1.d4, 1.c4 etc. This system was popularized by Georgian grandmaster Bukhuti Gurgenidze 1933-2008, after whom it is named. Estonian GM Jan Ehlvest, born 1962, one of the world's leading players in his time, played the 1988 Candidates tournament, has this opening in his repertoire as Black for many years.
