Friedrich Saemisch, 1896-1975, is an almost forgotten master who only discovered his chess talent after a serious war injury. He rapidly improved and was one of the world's outstanding players in the 1920s. He won a match against Reti in 1922 (+4, =3, -1), was third behind Alekhine and Rubinstein in Baden-Baden 1925, and won tournaments in Vienna 1921 (ahead of Euwe), Dortmund 1928 (ahead of Reti, Bogoljubov and Spielmann), and Swinemuende 1930 (ahead of Flohr). He is also known for his excellent play in blind simuls. Michael Dombrowsky is a chess author and historian, he wrote the books Berliner Schachlegenden and Cambridge Springs 1904.
