Izmailov fell victim to Stalin's purges - he was arrested in 1936 and executed in 1937. His name was then almost erased from the Soviet chess press for more than 50 years. Peter Izmailov's biography was written by his son Nikolai, who practically did not know his father and spent years searching the archives to write his father's life story.
