Life and chess autobiography of Grandmaster Lilienthal and 77 annotated games. Sixty of the games were selected and annotated by Lilienthal himself, and a further seventeen were added by Douglas Griffin, who translated the book from the Russian. Andor Lilienthal, 1911-2010, was born in Moscow, lived in Hungary from the age of two, lived in the Soviet Union from 1935 to 1976, then returned to Hungary. He was one of the best players of his time, playing against 10 world champions, seven of whom lost to him at least once: Lasker, Capablanca (the 1936/37 Hastings game went into the textbooks), Alekhine, Euwe, Botvinnik, Smyslov, Menchik. Lilienthal was Smyslov's second in the matches against Botvinnik, in 1951-1960 he was Tigran Petrosian's coach.
