Jungmanns article is the first printed chess text in Czech language - originally published in the magazine Hlasatel in 1806, this is its first appearence in a book. Schiffers, Emanuel: Samouchitel shakhmatnoy igry.
Petrograd, Izd. T-va A- F. Marks, no date (1917), 6th edition, VI, 336p. 530 grams. Later binding with no lettering. Large 8vo (23-25 cm). Fair to good: spine slightly worn at the top, otherwise binding is OK. The title page has been damaged and is amateurishly repaired with tape. Some pages are a little closely trimmed, but the trimming is never affecting the text. The last leaf is somewhat damaged. Internally OK, pages normally browned by age but clean and with no writings. (It contains 675 games and 261 endganes. The first edition of this book was published in 1907. This 6th edition was published in 1917 and is the last or one of the last chess books published before the USSR was founded. Sakharov does not list this book in the 1st edition, it is only listed in the 2nd edition under number 71. Schiffers book was later published in 1919 as the first chess book published in the USSR. Noted chess writer, journalist, some of his books became bestsellers. Germanist, Professor of the Charles Univeristy in Prague.
